Five Health Resolutions for the New Year

Jan Blog PhotoThe start of each year is the time when most of us evaluate our lives and make plans and pledges to get our health back on track. We create calendars and schedules, revamp our pantry and closets and our attitudes become hopeful for all the promises of a new year. Right now is the perfect time to get in shape. But how many of us have welcomed a new year with promises of losing weight and eating right and forgotten our commitment to ourselves before Easter or even Valentine’s Day? I know I have.

Let’s face it, change is hard, but there are ways to finally commit to your healthier self. Instead of resolving to tackle one ginormous issue all at once, break it down into mini goals. Small changes over time will help move you along on the road to a better you.

With that in mind, here are my top five picks for attainable resolutions that you can actually stick to!

Commit to one small change a day. Creating a long list of New Year’s resolutions might seem like a good idea, but not fulfilling each item on the list will ultimately just discourage you. For optimal success, it’s best to start off small and slowly work toward your ultimate goal. For example, if you’d like to lose ten pounds, try going for a walk after dinner one night and the next day, try doubling your distance. The more little changes you make to your daily routine, the more likely they’ll become habitual.

Eat nutritiously 80% of the time. Weight loss experts agree that drastically changing your eating habits is not a viable solution. Eliminating indulgences will initially help you lose weight, but you will inevitably feel deprived, crave your favorite foods and end up binging on them. Instead, try to eat healthy 80% of the time. If you eat well the majority of the time, a few treats here and there won’t hurt your overall weight loss efforts and you’ll able to stick to the plan.

Schedule your workouts. Would you haphazardly skip a dentist appointment? A meeting with your child’s teacher? A dinner date with a friend? Of course not! Treat your workouts the exact same way. If you schedule your workouts, they’ll become appointments you won’t miss – just like any other obligation. Plus, seeing them in your calendar may help you stick to your resolution.

Be social outside social media. Maintaining and nurturing personal relationships is good for your health. In fact, research suggests people with strong social ties live longer than those without. In a technology-fixated era, it’s never been more important to maintain personal contact with old friends and family, not just through cyber space.

Get more sleep. You probably already know a good night’s sleep can do wonders for your mood, not to mention your appearance. But sleep is more beneficial to your health than you may realize. A lack of sleep has been linked to an elevated risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. And ask any new mom and she’ll confirm that a lack of sleep can affect your memory. So go to bed early, and don’t feel bad about it.

It’s hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you’ve swept up the confetti, but it’s not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. If you need support, VH Pharmacy may be able to help with compounded solutions. Here’s to your health!
