Are Prescription Sleep Aids Your Answer To A Good Night’s Sleep?

It’s no secret I’m a big believer in healthy sleep habits. Sleep is as critical for good health and well-being as nutrition and physical activity. Getting too little sleep may affect your mood, your weight, your memory, even your sex life. But what do you do when the problem is outside of your control?

If you’re routinely having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, you might be suffering from insomnia. Although treatment depends on the underlying cause, sleeping pills can help when stress, travel or other disruptions keep you awake.

The drugs below have been proven most effective in treating insomnia as prescription sleep aids.  These typical pharmaceutical options will help you fall asleep, stay asleep, or both.

  • Zolpidem (Ambien) is a sedative-hypnotic medication. Its effects persist later into the night and may help you stay asleep longer. This prescription must be taken at bedtime and used when you have trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep.
  • Zaleplon (Sonata) is a hypnotic medication. Because this drug stays active in the body for the shortest amount of time, it means you can try to fall asleep on your own. But, if you’re still staring at the clock at 2 am, you can take it without feeling drowsy in the morning. However, if you’re problem is waking during the night, this might not be the best choice for you.
  • Eszopiclone (Lunesta) is also a hypnotic medication. It has proven most effective for patients who have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Studies suggest this drug can stay active in your system for approximately six hours. That means you need to make sure you have a full eight hours to devote to sleeping before taking it.
  • Ramelteon (Rozerem) is a melatonin receptor agonist. That means it can selectively target specific receptors in your brain that are responsible for controlling your sleep-wake cycle. It works by mimicking melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that is produced during the sleep period. Ramelteon is also the first prescription sleep medication that has shown no evidence of abuse or dependence.
  • Over-the-Counter sleep aids are typically antihistamines. They’re safe enough to be sold without a prescription. However, if you’re taking other drugs also containing antihistamines, like cold medicine, you could inadvertently take too much. If you have any doubts, you should always consult a professional.

But what if you’ve tried these options and are still left craving a good night’s sleep?  Some people find that generic pharmaceuticals don’t help them sleep at all, and they’re left just as restless as before. If this is the case, compounding might be the solution you need.

Compounding focuses on creating medication specifically for an individual. Compound sleep aids can be created to handle your specific problem directly, and provide you with the rest you desperately need. Mixing the right ingredients and chemicals associated with sleep in the body can help give your body the push it needs to fall into deep sleep.  It might even make your morning routine caffeine-free.
