Cope with the Stress of Traveling

During the warm summer months, when kids are out of school, most Americans plan summer getaways. In fact, as many as 66% of Americans vacation this time of year. And while traveling is fun and exciting for some people, it also comes with its fair share of stresses. Here are a few tips to help you cope with travel stress:

Sleeping on a plane is not easy! All the distractions and hassles of air travel make it almost impossible to sleep on planes. On short flights, sleeping may not be an issue. But on time-zone-crossing and transatlantic flights when sleeping becomes something of a necessity, there are products that can offer you the rest you crave.

Ambien, with which many globetrotters are familiar, will produce a good amount of sleep without leaving you feeling groggy upon arrival.

Dramamine, the well-known, over-the-counter motion sickness remedy, can also double as a sleep aid. But beware: it will knock you out! If you’re on a short distance flight or need to be alert when you land, you may want to avoid this one.

Melatonin is not a sleeping pill, but a naturally produced hormone the body secretes as light fades at the end of the day. In medicinal form, it acts like a sleep trigger. It’s important to point out that recommended dosage varies from brand to brand so results may vary.

More than 25 million Americans suffer from some form of flight anxiety. The only thing people fear more than flying is public speaking. So what do you do if flying is a must? Medication can often alleviate the stress of traveling and the physical symptoms that sometimes manifest themselves from the stress, such as headaches, stomachaches and difficulty breathing.

Xanax, Valium and other fast-acting anxiety medications are often prescribed to anxious flyers. But be aware that all of these prescription drugs have unique side effects, the most common being grogginess. You may feel tired hours after the plane has landed.

Airports and airplanes are full of germs, viruses and bacteria, thanks, in part, to heavy crowds and the recycled air. If you have a strong immune system, your body will be able to handle these assaults without much trouble. But if your immune system is compromised, you can end up getting sick.

Probiotic, or good bacteria, is available as a supplement. These supplements can help prevent the constipation that many people experience while traveling.

Zinc is a great anti-viral supplement that can shorten the duration of a cold as well as decreasing the severity, if taken within 24 hours of your onset of symptoms.

Gone are the days when flying was a glamorous experience, complete with enough legroom to stretch your legs and in-flight meals with real silverware. These days traveling can be stressful, even if it’s for fun, which is why many people have adopted their own methods of coping and de-stressing.  But if you still need help feeling your best one the road, “check in” with with us for healthy solutions.
