How Testosterone Therapy Can Help

According to the 2014 Census, the U.S. is experiencing considerable growth in its aging population. While the aging of our citizens will have a wide-range of implications on our country, their medical needs interest me the most. It’s amazing to watch the metamorphosis in our bodies as we mature. The physical is evident to all of us. We notice it when we look in the mirror … our hair is not as thick and shiny; our skin is not as supple; our muscles are not as pronounced. And it goes without saying that the inside is going through its own…

The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ

I recently came across a book that’s causing quite a stir. Not since Dr. Oz appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show to discuss the shape and color of a healthy poop has there been such open discussions on the subject. Let’s be honest, everybody poops. But it’s something only young kids are comfortable discussing in public. But this book might change everything.

Flavored Medicine – Compounded Prescription Candy

It’s no fun when your kids are sick. You want to do everything in your power to make them feel better. But the fact is that in most instances the only thing that’s going to help is medicine. We know … children and medicine are not the best of friends. We’ve all heard horror stories of parents having to plead and cajole their kids into taking a spoonful of something. Some of us have even starred in them. While we may applaud your efforts and laugh at your expense, we want you to know you don’t have to torture yourself….

February is National Heart Month

February is all about the heart – literally and figuratively. On the 5th, we “Go Red for Women.” On the 14th, we profess our lasting affection to our loved ones. And the other 27 days, we should be educating ourselves about heart disease in honor of National Heart Month. For years we were taught to recognize the tightness of the chest and the pain traveling down the arm as the telltale signs of imminent danger. But thanks to extensive research, we now know heart attack symptoms are significantly different in men and women. For women, major symptoms prior to their…

Want to Boost Your Brainpower?

The brain is probably the most incredible organ in the human body. It has amazed doctors and scientists for ages – how it works, how it develops, and how to keep it in tiptop shape. We’re all born with roughly 100 billion brain cells. But unlike the cells in other parts of our body that continuously renew, the brain cells we start with have to last us a lifetime. And that is exactly why we need to treat them well – pamper them, nourish them, and exercise them! How? Here are three ways to boost your brainpower:

Looking Back at 4 Top Fitness and Nutrition Trends in 2015

Like fashion, health trends are always changing. Many of us didn’t know a thing about gluten until it became a hot topic in 2010. As 2015 comes to an end, I’m excited and encouraged by the year we had in the health industry. There have been a lot of great trends this year, and it never hurts to be reminded of all the options available to improve our well-being!  So without further ado, here are my favorite fitness and nutrition trends from the past twelve months.

Need Another Reason to Eat Fresh Foods? Tyramine

Tyramine is a substance produced by the amino acid Tyrosine.  It’s found naturally in some foods, plants, and animals . It can also be created when food is cured or aged, or through fermentation and spoilage. Patients who take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including certain antidepressants and medications for Parkinson’s disease, may experience serious side effects if they follow a tyramine rich diet. Tyramine builds up in these patients resulting in side effects such as palpitations, headaches, nausea and vomiting. The most dangerous side effect is extremely high blood pressure that may result in stroke or death. Also, patients who suffer from frequent headaches…

The Dangers of Prescription Drugs

Americans are in a lot of pain. In fact a study published a few years back found that nearly 70% of all Americans are on at least one prescription drug. Sadly, the prescription pain drugs that should be dulling the pain sometimes create a new kind of problem for the patient–addiction. For people recovering from major surgeries, suffering from chronic pain or under treatment for cancer, the use of prescription drugs such as OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin is sometimes the only thing that makes the day bearable. The downside is that these are highly addictive prescription narcotics.

Glucosamine Supplements: The Simple Solution to Aging?

Glucosamine is a natural chemical found in the body. It is used by the body to make chemicals that help build tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and the fluid that surrounds joints. As a supplement glucosamine is most often used to try to ease the joint pain caused by arthritis.

Thinking About A Cleanse?

This time of year makes weight control so difficult! It almost feels like temptation is lurking behind every corner – leftover Halloween candy in the office, sweet potato pie at Thanksgiving dinner, and pretty much everything offered to you at every holiday party in December. All of these little indulgences add up, and, before you know it, it’s New Year’s Day and you’re forced to add “lose weight” to your list of resolutions. To ward off that dreaded post-holiday weight-gain guilt, some people like to get a jump start on their diet program now, before the peak holiday season. One way…
