Looking Back at 4 Top Fitness and Nutrition Trends in 2015
Like fashion, health trends are always changing. Many of us didn’t know a thing about gluten until it became a hot topic in 2010. As 2015 comes to an end, I’m excited and encouraged by the year we had in the health industry. There have been a lot of great trends this year, and it never hurts to be reminded of all the options available to improve our well-being! So without further ado, here are my favorite fitness and nutrition trends from the past twelve months.
EXPRESS WORKOUTS
Express workouts, meaning one that’s 20 minutes or less, became a top trend in 2015. And it’s no surprise why. In this over-scheduled, fast paced world we all seem to be living in, it’s not always easy to carve out an hour or more a day to fit in physical activity. Enter the quick workout! More and more people are realizing a good workout is about quality, not quantity.
THE DECLINE OF THE FAD DIET
This is a trend that continues to grow. Instead of food deprivation diets, more and more people, especially women, are turning to healthier, more realistic approaches to weight loss and management. People finally understand that diets don’t work and that maintaining a healthy lifestyle involves nourishing foods, physical activity and smart lifestyle choices.
NUTRITIONAL BALANCE
The decline of the fad diets really spearheaded the push toward a more wholesome, balanced diet. I think people grew tired to turning their backs on entire food groups or ingredients, like carbohydrates, fat and sugar. We’re once again starting to see the return of fat, which is an essential part of a well-rounded diet. Good fats – like those found in nuts, avocado, egg yolks and yogurt – are healthy and nutritious. Inversely, low fat products are usually full of sugar, artificial sweeteners and other chemicals to help them taste better.
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY
This year, the popularity of wearable technology devices soared. And why not?! Pedometers are so 1990s. Never before have we been able to track our activities as easily as we can today! From sleep cycles to steps walked to calories consumed, today’s devices will keep track of all of it.
EMBRACING CHANGE
By far my favorite trend of this year has been our ability to take stock of our well-being and make positive changes. We have modified our diets and our activity levels to better reach our personal goals. And I think corporations are starting to notice. Restaurants are serving healthier choices and providing nutritional information on their menus, and supermarkets are starting to offer healthier snacks and ready-made meals. All of these changes are sure to mean a health-prosperous 2016, and VH Pharmacy can’t wait to be a part of it.
